How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Many homeowners tend to classify their HVAC systems as either gas or electric based. Those who are aware they don’t use gas for heating often conclude they must have an electric furnace and air conditioning unit. However, what they actually possess is a heat pump system, which consists of an outdoor heat pump unit in conjunction with an indoor air handler or fan coil.

What is a heat pump and how does it work? A heat pump, which resembles a central air conditioner in appearance and size, uniquely provides both heating and cooling solutions for your home. Unlike a central air conditioning system that only cools, a heat pump functions as an air conditioner during the summer and reverses its operation in the winter to heat your home.

Typically, central heat pumps are designed as split systems, featuring both an indoor and an outdoor unit. Alternatively, some heat pumps are configured as packaged systems, where components like the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, and fan are all housed together outdoors in a single cabinet.

In the warmer summer months, the heat pump works by pulling heat from the indoor air, transferring it outside via a refrigerant. This process involves three main components: a compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator coil. The outdoor heat pump looks identical to a traditional air conditioner.

The indoor Air Handler / Fan Coil unit, housing the evaporator coil, draws heat and moisture out of your home’s air. The outdoor unit, containing the compressor and condenser, expels the absorbed heat outdoors. This cycle repeats to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, with the heat pump turning off when the home reaches the thermostat setting and back on as it warms up again.

During colder winter months, the operation reverses. The heat pump captures heat from the outdoor air—even in cold conditions—thanks to a low-temperature refrigerant that evaporates and absorbs heat. This heated gas is then compressed, transferred indoors, and condensed in the indoor coil, releasing warmth into your home. Without the need for a furnace, the system uses an air handler to distribute the warm air throughout your space.

Living in the Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati Tri-state region, temperatures can get so cold that heat pumps are unable to operate effectively. As a result, a source of “emergency heat” is added to the system, which is a common setting on compatible thermostats.

Adding an emergency heating source to a heat pump system is accomplished a number of ways including:

  • Electric heating elements are installed in the air handler/fan coil unit
  • Gas Furnaces pair with compatible Heat Pumps for use as an emergency heat source
  • LP / Propane Systems can serve as a back up or alternative heating source
