Air conditioning replacement often boils down to 3 questions that we cover in detail below…
-
- Should I repair or replace my AC unit?
- How much does it cost to install a new Air Conditioner?
- What type of air conditioning system is best for me?
Is It Time To Repair or Replace Your AC Unit?
People often struggle with the question of whether to repair or replace their air conditioning system. These 5 considerations will help bring clarity to the repair or replace delima…
How Old Is Your Air Conditioner?
If it is 15 years or older, it is probably time to consider replacing it. The average lifespan of an AC unit is between 12 and 15 years. Most manufacturers warranties are between 5 to 10 years so parts and labor are no longer covered.
How Often Does It Need To Be Repaired?
As an air conditioner ages out it will typically require more frequent repairs. If your AC unit required repair services during the past several cooling seasons it may be time to replace it.
Is Your AC Still Efficiently Cooling?
Modern air conditioning units are required to operate with higher cooling efficiencies. All new air conditioners must have a SEER rating of at least 14 in the Northern states, which includes the NKY and Cincinnati, OH areas. (In 2023, this was increased to 14 from 13…we have now transitioned to a SEER2 rating system).
If you have a cooling system with a SEER of below 13 or 14 then investing in a new high-efficiency AC replacement unit may pay for itself in energy savings! It is expensive to run older inefficient, low SEER units.
Have You Kept Up With Seasonal Maintenance?
In order to maximize the life of an air conditioner they require yearly cleaning and tune-ups. Seasonal AC maintenance service also ensures a system runs optimally. This is like changing the oil in your car. If you have not kept up with seasonal maintenance then your manufacturers warranties may be void and your cooling system is more likely to consistently break down.
Are Repair Costs Too Expensive? The 5000 Rule...
The ‘5000 Rule’ is a simple formula to help people gauge whether a repair is worth the expense. Multiply the age of your air conditioner by the estimated repair cost. If that equals more than $5,000, then you are probably better off investing in AC replacement services.
How Much Does It Cost To Install a New Air Conditioner?
The cost of installing a new air conditioning unit is influenced by several factors, including the choice of equipment and the complexity of the installation process. The best cooling system for a home located in the Cincinnati area depends on a wide range of factors, all of which can dramatically affect the cost of installing a new AC or heat pump.
Top 7 Factors Influencing AC Replacement Cost
- Type(s) of Air Conditioning Systems / Equipment
- Size of Home/Building and Layout/Structure
- Number of People & Cooling Needs/Preferences
- Energy Efficiency Objectives
- Indoor Air Quality Needs
- Are Ductwork Modifications or Repairs Needed?
- Are Electrical System Upgrades Needed?
People with an average size home can expect air conditioner replacement costs to be anywhere from $2,000 to over $10,000.
Such a price variance underscores the importance of working with a trusted, local HVAC company, like AnyWeather Heating & Air, in order to get a free estimate covering replacing your air conditioner or HVAC system. Air Handlers & Heat Pump AC Systems
Heat pumps offer a high-efficiency option for cooling your home. They provide cooling in the warm summer months by removing heat from your home to the outside. This process can be energy-efficient compared to traditional cooling methods, which generate cold air directly. Traditional heat pump HVAC systems pair an out door heat pump, which looks like a traditional AC unit, with an indoor air handler / fan coil unit, that looks similar to a furnace.
A high-efficiency, variable-speed heat pump paired with a variable speed fan coil/air handler can provide one of the most energy efficiency air conditioning systems available.
Air Handler Functions in a Heat Pump System
- Circulation: When cooling, the primary function of the air handler / fan coil unit is to circulate air throughout your home. It uses a fan or blower to move air over the fan coil, thereby distributing cool conditioned air through the ductwork to different rooms.
- Filtering / Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): Air handlers typically contain filters that clean the air as it circulates through the system, removing dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. This helps improve indoor air quality. Additional IAQ products like whole home filtration systems and in-duct UV air purifiers can be installed with an air handler.
- Cooling & Heating: In a heat pump system, the air handler works in tandem with the outdoor unit to provide heating or cooling. During the cooling season, the system extracts heat from the inside air and transfers it outdoors. For heating, the process is reversed, allowing the heat pump to remove cold air from inside and releasing it outside.
- Humidity: Some air handlers also help in controlling the humidity levels within the home. By properly conditioning the air, during the cooling season, making the indoor environment more comfortable. In addition, IAQ products like whole home humidifiers and dehumidifiers can be installed and integrated into an HVAC system.
Air Handler Installation Considerations
- Location: The location is often chosen for ease of installation, maintenance accessibility, and efficient air distribution.
- Integration with Ductwork: The design and installation of a buildings ductwork play a significant role in the overall efficiency and performance of the cooling system.
- Energy Efficiency: Modern air handlers are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Features such as variable speed fans can significantly reduce energy consumption by coordinating & adjusting the airflow rate to the current need, rather than running at full speed continuously.

Ductless Mini Split AC System Installation
Ductless heat pumps or air conditioners, often referred to as mini-splits, offer a versatile and energy-efficient solution for cooling homes, especially in areas where traditional ducted HVAC systems may not be feasible or cost-effective.
Their design comprises two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser and one or more indoor air-handling units. These units are connected by a conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain, requiring only a small hole through the wall for installation. This setup allows for a less invasive installation process compared to traditional ducted systems.
One of the primary advantages of ductless AC systems are their flexibility in cooling individual rooms or zones within a home. This is particularly beneficial for new additions, renovated spaces, or any area where extending or installing ductwork is impractical or too expensive. By enabling individual control over different zones, users can adjust temperatures in occupied rooms without affecting the rest of the house, leading to improved comfort and energy savings.
